Press Statement from Paddington Waterside Partnership
14 June 2013

A 2000-year old legend turned modern-day event, Paddington Waterside Partnership has been running their version of Dragon Boat Racing for nearly a decade.

Dragon Boat Racing is an annual summer fundraising event organised by Paddington Waterside Partnership as part of its corporate community involvement programme, which connects the companies at Paddington to their surrounding community.

Last night, 13 June 2013, each of seven competing local companies raced along Paddington Basin in an effort to win the accolade of the ‘Fastest Dragon Boat Team 2013’, raising £5,000 between them for five local sports charities:

  • Greenhouse Pioneers Basketball
  • All Stars Boxing
  • London Tigers
  • Westminster Boating Base

Thanks to the sponsors of the event, European Land and Derwent London and hosts Merchant Square. Prizes were kindly donated by local Hilton London Paddington and Heathrow Express.

Prizes were awarded to:

  • Statoil - the fastest team;
  • Marks & Spencer - the team who raised the most sponsorship;
  • Etc. Venues - the team with the best fancy dress theme.

Kay Buxton, Chief Executive of Paddington Waterside Partnership said

Teams and charities had a chance to meet up at the event, each pair forging great camaraderie and giving a face to each and every worthy cause. It was a truly heart-warming achievement that painted a positive picture of London’s youth, their huge potential and proving just how they can benefit from sport, community spirit and inspirational fundraising events such as Dragon Boat Racing. This was the true measure of the success of this event and what can be achieved by companies based in Paddington.”
