If you want to experience a magical afternoon whilst indulging in the most exquisite afternoon tea; Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea at the Sanderson Hotel is definitely worth a try!
Upon entering the courtyard, you are surrounded by the most wonderful tea stands and bespoke crockery created by Luna & Curious.
Once seated you are presented with a napkin wrapped in a riddle, this is a lovely way to start off the experience with guests being intrigued as to what awaits them.
Guests are then invited to choose their choice of speciality tea from the special range created for this delightful afternoon. There is a choice of Rhubarb & Custard, Apple Pie or Mint Chocolate Chip tea; my favourite was the Rhubarb & Custard, a nostalgic childhood memory, but don’t worry, if this isn’t your thing, they do have regular English tea available.
A menu is then presented to guests inside a vintage book, detailing the magnificent delights that are available. A selection of sandwiches from Smoked Salmon on Dark Rye bread to Egg Mayonnaise in Sea Salt & Lemon bread are available. These sandwiches are also accompanied by a daily quiche, mine was roasted vegetables with goats cheese which was so tasty!
To follow these savoury bites are a selection of scones accompanied by Herb Butter, Clotted Cream and Jam.
Then came my favourite part, the cakes! A tiny “Tick Tock” clock Victoria sponge is beautifully platted on the second tier of the tea stand, along with an indulgent Mango Cheesecake, a Green Tea Mousse served inside a chocolate cup, and Carrot Meringues served on a bed of Pea Shoots. These pleasing deserts are finished off with a “Jelly Wonderland”. Guests are able to take a stroll through the courtyard to the Jelly Trolley to choose from a selection of homemade jellies. The choice on the day I went was Blackcurrant, Strawberry and Peach, they were all amazing, but my favourite was the Strawberry!
As this occasion was to celebrate my Mum’s birthday, we treated ourselves to a glass of Thienot Brut NV Champagne, which was a great way to finish the afternoon. The staff also brought over a personalised birthday slate with birthday wishes written in white chocolate icing and a small chocolate and cream Mille Feuille; outstanding service.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone celebrating a special occasion or just to treat yourself!
