A magic day with etc.venues - 13/05/2009

It’s important to us that we involve ourselves in the communities around us and to that end we have decided to support the charity Magic Breakfast. With nearly 3.8 million children in the UK living in poverty and missing essential meals, the charity works to provide children with “the most important meal of the day” – a healthy breakfast.

As part of the Magic Breakfast Scheme we work closely with St Michael’s School in Camden and held a Magic Smoothie Day to teach the children how to make smoothies. Six members of the etc.venues team, including four head chefs demonstrated smoothie making whilst discussing the benefits of a healthy breakfast and the importance of “5 a day”.

The children then had a chance to make smoothies themselves, working in teams to create the “smoothie of the day”. Every member of each team was involved in the process, which also included maths skills, such as weighing and measuring. Over 200 children took part in the activities, ranging from pre-school to year 6. The older children were also given a chance to talk to the etc.venues team about working in hospitality.

Alan Palmer, head chef at Dexter House: “One moment that stuck out in my mind was when I got down on my knees while surrounded by the children, scored a pomegranate and asked the children if they would like to see some great tasting little gems... it was like a feeding frenzy, there were hands everywhere, all trying to get in on the action. They thought they were great and one little girl asked to see the fruit again so she could ask her mum to buy it! To me this is an education they will remember for a long while. A fantastic day and an honour to be a part of.”

Kirstie McKevitt, Learning Mentor at St Michael’s School provided the following thanks: “Friday was a huge success, thank you for all your organisation and hard work. The feedback from staff and children is great – the day covered many elements of the curriculum in a fun and inspiring way.”

Elaine Jackson, etc.venues’ project manager for Magic Breakfast commented: “As a business we want to give back to the communities around as and ensure we are working in harmony with local people. We considered a whole variety of alternative charities before settling on Magic Breakfast. Their focus on nutritious food so closely mirrors our brain food philosophy that it seemed a match made in heaven. The whole team is thoroughly looking forward to the next event.”

We will continue to support the school throughout the course of the next year through a sponsored run and additional class activities such as fun, children-friendly workshops on marketing, hospitality and business.
